The Dutch Golden Age The Dutch Golden Age was a period of immense economic, scientific, military, and cultural progress in the Dutch Republic. A time of peace and prosperity in the region, the seventeenth century saw the Dutch become some of the most influential global economic and political superpowers of their time, asserting an empire that spanned multiple European countries, as well as various trading posts and colonies around the world. It all began with the United Provinces of the Netherlands, who declared their independence from Spanish rule in 1581. With this newfound freedom, Dutch merchants, capitalists, and inventors were now free to pursue business opportunities outside of Hispaniola and the Spanish imperial system.
