Understanding Dutch Diplomacy and the Politics of the Netherlands Tucked away in a corner of northwest Europe is a small but influential nation known as the Netherlands. The Dutch have a rich and storied history as well as many unique features which define their politics and diplomacy and this article will discuss those facets in detail. The most noteworthy and recognizable aspect of Dutch politics is that the country is led by a constitutional monarchy, meaning a royal head of state is bound to uphold a set of rules set in place by a constitution. The current monarchy is led by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.
