Celebrating Dutch Music – Genres and Styles

The wonderful country of Netherlands is home to a wide variety of styles and genres of music that have spread across the world and brought a taste of Dutch sound to the rest of the world. From Eurodance to gabber, Dutch music has been a major influence in some of the popular music genres found in other countries. In this article, we'll take a look at some of the more popular Dutch music genres and ways to celebrate them.

Dutch Pop Music

As a major musical center in Europe, the Netherlands have become a hotbed for pop music. A number of Dutch bands have had international success, including Daft Punk, Anouk, and Within Temptation. Many Dutch pop artists draw influences from other genres such as folk or rock, allowing them to create a unique sound to their music. Dutch pop music has often been described as being “fun, upbeat, and catchy” making it popular among European and international audiences alike.

Dutch Folk Music

An important aspect of the Dutch music scene is folk music. Traditionally Dutch folk music was influenced by its rural roots. From the music experienced in small villages to the introduction of new styles, Dutch folk music has been an important part of Netherlands’ culture. Common instruments used in folk music include guitars, drums, banjos, mandolins, and upright basses, as well as various other instruments. Dutch folk music is often lighthearted and helpful, providing entertainment while also telling stories of individual and regional history.

Dutch Indie Music

Dutch indie music has become increasingly popular over the years. Dutch indie bands were initially inspired by punk and indie bands from the UK and US, although this genre has since become more eclectic in its approach. Indie bands focus on creating their own sound and often take cues from many different genres of music. This allows them to create a unique sound that stands apart from other musical styles. Dutch Gabba Music

Arguably the most unique music that the Netherlands has to offer is gabba. This style of electronic music is characterized by its fast-paced rhythms and intense sound. Gabba began in the late 1980s and has since become a mainstay of the Dutch music scene, with popular Gabba DJs such as Angerfist and Evil Activities performing at large festivals and clubs.
