Dutch cheese varies in flavors and textures, ranging from semi-soft to hard cheeses and every shade of yellow in between. One of the most popular Dutch cheese specialties is Gouda. This is a yellow cheese made from cow’s milk that is usually aged for about twelve weeks. It’s flavor is described to be somewhat sweet and creamy.

Dutch Stamppot
Stamppot, which translates to ‘mashed pot’, is one of the Netherlands’ most popular everyday dishes. This mashed potato dish is typically cooked with vegetables of your choice. A historical favorite is hutspot, a combination of potatoes, carrots and onions that is usually served with roasted meat.
Oliebollen
Oliebollen, translated to ‘oil balls’, are deep-fried sweet treats that are often served at the turn of the year. This special Dutch treat is made with sugary, dough-like doughnut mix, which is seasoned with nutmeg, currants and raisins, and each oliebollen is deep-fried in hot oil before being served.
Bitterballen
These tasty fried snacks are very popular in the Netherlands. Bitterballen are deep-fried in clarified butter and are typically served with a strong brown mustard. They’re made by mixing a combination of minced meat, bouillon, butter and flower, which is then formed into small balls and fried.
Poffertjes
Poffertjes are made of buckwheat batter and usually served with butter and powdered sugar. These small pancakes are a beloved Dutch treat and often sold at festivals and on the streets. They’re usually served warm and puffy and are best enjoyed in one of the many pancake houses in Amsterdam.

Dutch Apple Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
- 150 g butter
- 150 g caster sugar
- 3 eggs
- 150 g self-raising flour
- 2 apples
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons of caster sugar for topping
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 160°C and prepare the cake tin with butter and parchment paper
- Cream the butter and the 150 g of caster sugar until creamy
- Separately, mix the eggs and the flour in a bowl
- Add the egg and flour mixture to the creamed butter and sugar, and mix until fully combined
- Peel the apples, core them and cut into small cubes
- Add the apples to the dough and mix until fully combined
- Pour the dough into the cake tin and spread it evenly
- Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of sugar onto the cake
- Bake the cake for 40 minutes until golden brown
- Let the cake cool off before serving
Dutch Bitterballen Recipe
Ingredients:
- 500 g (minced) beef
- 1/2 onion
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 100 ml beef stock
- 1 tablespoon of parsley
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 2 tablespoons of flour
- 2 eggs
- 100 g breadcrumbs
- Oil for frying
- Salt and pepper
Instructions:
- Start by heating a pan on medium heat and adding the butter.
- When butter is melted, add the chopped onion and garlic and sautƩ until the onion is soft and golden.
- Add the mince and fry until brown.
- Add the beef stock and let it simmer for 10 minutes. 5.Take the pan off the heat and add the parsley.
- Let the mixture cool down completely and form into small balls with your hands.
- Take three shallow bowls and fill them with flour, the whisked eggs and the breadcrumbs.
- Take a ball and roll it in the flour, dip it into the egg and finally roll it in the breadcrumbs.
- Repeat until all the balls have been crumbed.
- Heat the oil in a pan and fry the balls until golden brown, then place them on a plate covered with paper towels.
- Serve the bitterballen warm with a cup of Dutch mustard.
