Dutch Military History and its Impact on the Netherlands

With a long and eventful history full of tumultuous conflicts, the Dutch military has had a lasting impact on the Netherlands of today. From its early days in the 15th and 16th centuries, to its role in the 20th century’s two World Wars, the Dutch military has left a lasting mark on the nation and its people. The military has been an important part of the Netherlands' history since its earliest days. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Dutch fought hard to gain their independence from the Spanish, under the leadership of William of Orange. This rebellion established the Republic of the Seven United Provinces and gave the Dutch their first taste of autonomy.

In the 17th century, the Dutch were a major power on the international stage. As a formidable seafaring nation, they controlled a vast trading empire, expanding their reach from the eastern Mediterranean to the coasts of Japan and Indonesia. The early 20th century saw the Netherlands become heavily involved in the two World Wars, playing a significant role in both of them. In World War I, Dutch forces fought alongside the allied powers, securing important military victories in what is now Belgium. In World War II, Dutch forces experienced some of the most devastating losses of the war, as the country was invaded, occupied and annexed by the Nazis. Despite these losses, however, the Netherlands's neutral stance in the war enabled it to remain an important center of operations for the allies.

The effect of the Dutch military on the Netherlands’ history can be seen in a few ways. In the nation’s independence, fortification of borders and its neutrality, the military enabled the nation to remain free and autonomous throughout the centuries.
