Dutch Music – Classical and Contemporary

Music has always been a major part of Dutch culture, from traditional, classical, and contemporary to jazz, blues, and rock. Over the centuries, Dutch musicians have made an indelible mark on the world's musical landscape, both as performers and composers.

From the treasured compositions of classical Dutch composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Willem de Fesch, Jan Sweelinck, and Louis Spohr to contemporary chart-topping Dutch musicians such as Anouk, Martin Garrix, and Tiësto, it can be said that Dutch music is as diverse and vibrant as it is timeless.

The Classical Period of Dutch Music

The classical period of Dutch music, which is generally described as lasting from 1600 to 1815, saw many important names emerge. Bach, one of the most celebrated and influential of all composers, emigrated to Leipzig, Germany, in 1750 where he became music director of the Thomaskirche. He continued to compose music even after his death in 1750, such as his The Well-Tempered Clavier, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest works of Western music ever written.

Another of the most influential names in Dutch classical music is Jan Sweelinck. A one-time pupil of Dutch organist Peter Ibrahim Hoofdman, Sweelinck refined Dutch keyboard music, creating a unique and distinct style. Willem de Fesch is yet another exemplary composer from the Dutch classical period. His music incorporates elements from the French, Italian, and German styles of his day, creating concertos, sonatas, and even operas. His highly influential composition, the Double Violin Concerto in C major, is said to be a major influence on the development of the modern string quartet.

Contemporary Dutch Music

The Netherlands is home to some of the biggest contemporary recording artists, many of whom have received global recognition and accolades. Amongst them are Anouk, who has won numerous awards for her unique blend of rock and pop, as well as multi-talented pop singer and actress Caro Emerald.

Martin Garrix is a 21st-century Dutch-born producer, DJ, and singer, who has achieved global recognition for his innovative mix of EDM and other genres. Tiësto, known as "The Godfather of EDM", has also made a huge impact on the contemporary Dutch music scene, winning a Grammy in 2013.

In the contemporary jazz scene, too, the Dutch have made an impressive mark. Dutch jazz has traditionally been strongly influenced by both American and European styles, with artists such as saxophonist Ferdinand Povel, clarinetist Willem van Manen, and trumpeter Eric Vloeimans being highly acclaimed in the jazz world.

Dutch Music Today

Today, Dutch music continues to evolve and grow, with genres such as EDM, electro-pop, and rock becoming increasingly popular. The Amsterdam Music Festival, founded in 2010, draws some of the world's best EDM performers, while the annual Dutch Jazz Meeting in Laren draws audiences from far and wide.

It can be said, then, that Dutch music is as vibrant, diverse, and compelling as ever, with both classical and contemporary artists continuing to make an indelible mark on the world's musical landscape.
