Exploring Dutch Religion, Philosophy and Faith

What does it mean to be Dutch, and what has shaped the culture and identity of the Dutch people through their religion, philosophy and faith? This article looks at the beliefs and practices that have influenced Dutch society from its earliest days, and the role they continue to play in the 21st century.

The vast majority of the Dutch population are believers in Christianity and followers of Protestant denominations, specifically the Reformed Church in the Netherlands (Gereformeerde Kerk) and the Dutch Reformed Church (Nederlandsen Hervormde Kerk). The Church of the Netherlands is an independent body and claims a membership of over 6 million. However, the real strength of the church lies in its control of the education system, with religion classes and activities being widely incorporated into curricula throughout the country.

The Dutch have traditionally ascribed to a Calvinistic theology, which emphasizes personal responsibility and the importance of work. This is reflected in their pragmatic approach to life, with frugality and practicality being highly valued traits. As a result, the Dutch are well known for their success in the business world and their commitment to excellence in the workplace.

In addition to the Calvinistic faith, Dutch culture is profoundly shaped by its rich history of philosophical inquiry. It is believed that the Netherlands are the birthplace of the Enlightenment, a movement which reintroduced classical thought to 17th century Europe and helped shaped the development of modern science and democracy. Dutch philosophy was heavily influenced by Descartes, Spinoza, Grotius and other scholars, who laid the groundwork for many of the ideas that are core to the Western world today. One of the most important concepts developed during the Dutch Enlightenment was that of 'tolerance'. The Dutch have long been known for their openness and inclusivity, with many different religions, cultures and ideas all being respected and embraced. This has enabled immigrants from many different countries to integrate themselves into Dutch society and it has laid the foundations for much of the country's current success. The Impact of Dutch Social Movements and their Legacy We often don't think of Dutch social movements when we think of Dutch history - we often forget about them in comparison to the Western European nation's many landmarks and attractions.
